Come, One Promised

Painting by Jacques Tissot, Mary with infant Jesus in the Manger
Come,
one promised
and ransom
the people
in captivity.

Come,
bright morning star
on the path
straightened
by the messenger.

Come,
light of the world,
shine into our darkness.
No longer will we
walk in shadows.

Come,
root of Jesse's stump,
blossom into the vine
offered
to save us.

Come,
strength of weakness,
lift the lowly
into the embrace
of Your love.

Come,
that we might recognize You,
as a baby,
as a king,
in spite of our blindness.

Come,
into the hearts of all,
sinner and righteous,
ransom us
not from Roman swords,
but from ourselves.
