The Vineyard Tender (John 15:1-10)

Image
Into the vineyard, the one who prunes, He who strips away every branch that bears no fruit.   Into the vineyard, He who breaks away the dead growth and diseased saplings who have severed themselves from the vine.   Into the vineyard, the one who takes notice of every fiber in every leaf. He who knows His crop, as no other.   Live then, within the vine. Seek your nourishment and remain in the one sitting with you, whose bread and wine are of the same vineyard. copyright 2023 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author From the Collection:  According to John

For Them (It Is Spoken)

Image
(John 17:1-26) There’s a prayer, spoken not for the welfare of the speaker, but for the souls of those gathered at table. It is spoken for those who will deny, those who will hide in the shadows when the authorities approach and a trial ensues. It is spoken for those who have not paid attention, those who will wake in the garden frightened because they do not yet understand. It is spoken for friends, for those chosen to walk at His side through small towns and villages, chosen to hear and listen. It is spoken also for those who do not dine in His midst, those who will see love in slivers of wood, those who will seek grace in thorns and hope in bread and wine. copyright 2019 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author From the Collection;  According to John

The Humble Servant (John 1:6-18)

Image
From out of the dessert, the wilderness, where one has prayed without luxury and drawn close to his creator. Animal skins for clothing, one who will never make a name for himself. He will leave all the glory to the one who shall be glorified. His life is but to come and prepare a path for those who have never considered themselves to be holy. The one who follows is greater. The Word made flesh. The one who has come from His heavenly throne to walk among us. And the humble servant in animals skins opens the eyes and hearts of the few that the Word might embrace the many. copyright 2018 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author From the Collection;  According to John

The Word (John 1:1-5 & Genesis 1:1-2)

Image
The Word was, in the beginning, Genesis, and the Gospels. The Word witnessed creation. Through the Word all was formed, moon and stars. The Word is the essence of the sky, the sea, of mountains and valleys. The Word is a spoken utterance bathing all creation in light. A light dispelling all darkness. A light no shadow will ever quench. copyright 2018 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author From the Collection;  According to John

I Am He (John 4:1-42)

Image
Carl Heinrich Bloch - Woman at the Well He asks me for a drink of water.   The man, a Jew, who sees me for what I am, but still, does not condemn my flesh. I have known many like him, those who claim a special union with the God of my ancestors. Do I know of Messiah? Do I believe he will come to rescue the house of Israel?   Is Samaria included in the liberation? Stories, told by my angry father.   Stories told by a couple of my husbands, amid laughter and cheap wine, I do not share this thought with the Jew at the well. He looks to be neither a warrior nor a charlatan. Why would he ask me for a drink?   My ancestors worshiped on this mountain.   We do not journey to the temple in Jerusalem and offer doves and unblemished lambs to God.   He should not consider us clean. He speaks of life giving water, living water.   I will never thirst again if I drink the water he offers.   How can that be, the dust of this l...

Greater and Less - A Sermon (John 3:30)

Image
Jesus asks this of us, let My light outshine your shadows, let My will hold more importance than yours. I stand for myself often, plotting my course to some perceived comfort and fame. Yet Jesus asks to be greater as we evolve into less. Jesus asks this of us, allow Him a chance to guide, a chance to lay His footprints before ours, through the sands of our worries. Know we cannot stand without Him. We are to lay down our pride and our desires of personal glory. Then He will gain greatness in our hearts, as we become less. copyright 2018 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author From the Collection;  According to John

The Unimportant (John 1:16-27, Isaiah 40:3)

Image
We are the unimportant.   Those who live day to day, without much hope for tomorrow.   We listen to prophets, longing to hear of a life, any life, better than what we have. We are stepped on by Romans and puppet kings.   If the empire desecrating our land were not here, another would be. And we watch him.   The authorities seem curious.   Why does this one stand waist deep in the water and baptize?   Why does he call out to the crowds, demanding they repent, claiming he straightens a path for one greater? “Who are you?” One of the priests shouts for a second time. “I am not the Messiah,” the Baptist answers. A few amongst the repentant step out of the water, onto the shore.   Their hope for a kingdom renewed in David’s name momentarily crushed. “Are you Elijah then?” “I am not.” The Baptist pauses before stepping into water less deep.   His wet garments clung to his torso. “Neither am I a prophet, but I will tell y...

The Only Son

Image
Christ Instructing Niccodemus - Crijn Hendricksz He comes to Jesus under the cloak of darkness.  He is fearful, pulling his garment over his head.  He peers at the ground, hoping to be unseen, like the poor and unrighteous.  But he has wealth and he understands the scriptures.  Most in his sect would not support his desire to speak with the itinerant preacher.  They had heard some of the Rabbi's teachings and did not approve.  He did not want to feel the stares of ridicule or listen to their words of mockery. So he waits until night and then slips into the street where the darkness will absorb him into its anonymity. He has heard much about this Jesus.  His words hold authority.  He has captivated the lonely, the diseased, those who have never considered themselves worthy of hearing.  He speaks of God in a way alien to the scribes.  He shares the scriptures as if they are alive, and are not just symbols scratched onto papyrus....

Love

Image
This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. John 15:12 Love, when the world around you deserves less. Be the beacons of light shining into the hearts of those who struggle in darkness. Love, when you have been ridiculed and spoken falsely of. You are the ones who know the Father how can you not treasure His every creation. Love, as the savior loves, from the sinners table and from the cross. Seek out every lost sheep and change their direction. Love, those who despise your name. Love the friend who denies and the one who betrays. Love the soldier who whips and the one who swings the hammer. Love, and you can expect to be loved. copyright 2017 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author From the Collection;  According to John

The Way, The Truth, The Life

Image
Jesus said to him,   “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6  The way, a road with a single lane leading to the desired destination. There may be rocks and ruts to stumble over, but he who walks in the light will not trip. The truth, the prophecy fulfilled by the son, the spoken word of the one sent as a lamb for those who were and are lost. The life, the one spirit filling all who take faith into their hearts and treasure its essence. The strength guiding us along the road, to the destination, eternal. copyright 2017 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author From the Collection;  According to John

Not Among the Sheep

Image
But you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. John 10:26 "Woe unto You, Scribes and Pharisees" by James Tissot Found in a self-righteous state, wanting nothing less than the glory received in the sight of man, not God. Non-believers criticizing the inheritors of a kingdom they will never in this life see. The shepherd does not open the door for them, they know not His voice. They are subject to the pride of this world, not the Lord of their hearts. If you are not His sheep, what are you? Are you dust that breathes and then dies? Are you flesh without a soul? You come to listen hoping to validate your sin, a transgression which seeks the reward of man's adulation, not God's. copyright 2017 - Donald P James Jr. https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author From the Collection;  According to John
