A Marriage

Image
A marriage. A man takes the hand of his wife. Male and female. He said this, when they were too busy with their own questions. Why do we sully a gift? Why do we offer vows unholy, and define a covenant, between a woman and a man, by the world's twisted pride. A marriage. A beautiful bond for life. A foundation built on rock. As we have heard, a man and a woman, and the approval of the Lord. copyright 2025 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Sonnet of Love

Image
Singing a song making sense only to the singer. Words sung in intimacy between the soul and its keeper.   My song has few notes. The chords are chaotic. The measure changes with each whim, but the Lord understands each nuance of the melody.   Singing a song in a language foreign to other ears. Words meant as prayer, as conversation and as a sonnet of love. copyright 2025 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

The Artist

Image
I have always stood in awe at the creations of our loving God.   Despite all that I have never been for Him, He has been everything for me.   When I am discouraged I can turn to the east and watch the sunrise.   When I am lost I can face the western sky and watch the day come to rest.   When my soul is grounded and I am unable to look at His face, He lays out beautiful patterns of flowers at my feet.   He paints this world with every color imaginable and we have barely begun to see its beauty. copyright 2025 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Song of My Songs

Image
I sing you a song of my songs, one that speaks of all beauty, a field where wild flowers bloom and our youthful legs scamper through. I sing you a song of my songs, one where your hand is in mine, where our fingers have entwined and our hearts long to beat as one. I sing you a song of my songs, sung from a heart in your hands, with words not always perfect, rhythm never flawless. I sing you a song of my songs, one we have promised to sing together, no matter the joys or sorrows, wherever we go. copyright 2024 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Pride

Image
Pride, the opposite of humility, the door through which demons may enter, invited. The source of sin, the worst of sins. Satan's essential trait. Thoughts that center around self, without God, without love of other. Pride, where grace cannot exist, a viper that gnaws on the heart, tearing down peacefulness, and leaving broken vessels in its wake. Hubris wears a guise which is false. It is the heart of the fallen angels. It is love of self, and not God. copyright 2024 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Clear Water

Image
Clear water, cleansing water, water to wash the body, the mind and the soul. I have stains, but this water, this living water, Jesus spoke about, washes away every blemish of sin. Clear water that flows from mountain streams smooths the surface of rock and sand. Clear water that soften the jagged edges of iniquities bore by those who cup the fluid in their hands and pause to drink. copyright 2024 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Color

Image
Mourning fills this heart when hatred rears a head of ugliness. What race is not vulnerable to those who see only color?   Which pigment is purity, which is evil? We are the same in muscle, blood and bone. Blended hues on a tapestry of love. Mourning is a new day of life. The vile taste of every word spoken with weapons of hatred. My color is your color, red, blue, black, white, or brown. His color is our color, and with his head bowed from the cross He mourns for a broken world. copyright 2024 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Life

Image
When I was a young man I dreamt of being a musician. For a long time notes became a hobby. I dreamt of being a writer. At present, that is a hobby. I became a husband, a father, a grandfather. That is a life. In this life we need to follow the path the Lord has set out for us, not the one we would choose to set out for ourselves. copyright 2023 0 Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

One Brief Moment

Image
For one brief moment, the rising sun touched the incoming clouds with glory. The eastern sky was ablaze and for a moment the world was bathed in appreciation and the love of creation. He says, "Look to me now, not when you feel you are ready." He says, "See my glory now, with opened eyes. Do not wait for the clouds that will come and cause you to turn away." For one brief moment, the rising sun touched the incoming clouds with glory. I opened my eyes and took in a glimpse of heaven. A moment later the clouds moved in. copyright 2023 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

What Is Enough?

Image
Father Jonathan Meyer from All Saints Parish in Guilford Indiana gave a Homily  this weekend  entitled 'Is It Possible to Have Enough?' This Homily inspired the poem below. What is enough? I have my wife, my children and their children. I have a good book, a place to sit and a warm spring afternoon. I have my mug of hot coffee. The love of my life looks at me, over the top of the book she is engrossed in. I know her thoughts. They are mine as well. We have enough.  copyright 2023 Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Handrail of Heaven

Image
His hand is still small in ours, though larger than before. His voice forms syllables and words understood. He walks with steps much smaller than ours, concerned about sidewalks, squirrels and nuts. He tells us the color of a car and a Jeep, reminding us that a school bus is yellow and we need to check the mail. A walk of simplicity. Nothing matters but the moment. His small hand in ours and our hands on the handrail of heaven. copyright 2018 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

One Song

Image
One song offered on high, four voices in harmony blended by the years. Intimate voices praising the one truth, called to minister long ago, now called to other fields. We have blessed many despite our flaws. We have touched the heart and soul of those who stopped and listened. We have ministered to those who seek, as to ourselves. One song offered on high, a bittersweet tune, for we have sung its lyric and played its chords one last time. We who are the harmony offered to He who gives us voice. We who are the intimate praise offered to He who stoops low to listens copyright 2018 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Shepherd

Image
Shepherd, guiding a flock over rugged terrain, seeking the green valley where the sheep may lie down. Shepherd, leading by the sound of Your voice, to food abundant and water pure. Shepherd, who seeks the wandering stray, the soul vulnerable to the wolf. Shepherd, beckoning me to follow, to rely on Him, trusting Him to lead me through the narrow door of the sheepfold. copyright 2018 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Umbrellas

Image
Color my world in pastels brilliant. Change the darkness to light and the somber  to joy. Make me to see the wonder  of Your creation through torrents of rain. And to recall the warmth  of the sun's light when shadows prosper. Color my world with umbrellas  of various hues. A memory hi-lighted in my soul.  copyright 2018 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Seek the Lord (A Prayer for Sutherland Springs)

Image
Seek the Lord in the darkness. Do not let the shadows define your journey. Lean on His wounds when anger tells you to strike back. Seek the Lord when the world says there is no reason for doing so. Kneel and pray for the holy ones and the sinners. Seek the Lord when deep voids surround you. He stands in the light, risen from an empty tomb. The saints of Revelation bask in His glory, evil is crushed under His foot. Seek the Lord in the darkness. Do not let the shadows of this day change the course of your journey. Cling to Him when it is most difficult to see His light. copyright 2017 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Call to Worship

Image
The eastern sky fills with the sun, burning off the dew, giving brilliance to the shadows of night. A symphony of birds sing a greeting to a new day. A church bell rings, distant. It's melody beckons the weary. A tune of times simpler. This grace is amazing. Raise your voices in praise. A morning filled with blessings is given by the Giver. There are flowers at the roadside, wild in their growth and little children  who run up the steps. The bell calls, but worship has begun the moment I thanked God for a new day. copyright 2017 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Driftwood

Image
Drifting, a piece tree, discarded, in the grip of a turbulent sea. Taken in the current's chosen direction without effort on my part. Drifting beneath the hot sun of endless days, baking me dry. Listening to a gentle voice on the sandy beach. One who does not tire of saying, "Follow me". copyright 2017 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

New Day's Light

Image
Troubled at times, by splinters against raw wounds. The wood has no comfort in its grain. I could never do as you did. My fear would crush me before the first nail found flesh. They broke bone, infused your blood with the fiber of the tree. A sapling grown tall with purpose beyond imagination. Dark clouds hover in the sky. The moment feels emptied of life. Help my troubled heart to find solace in the new day's light. copyright 2016 - Donald P James Jr  https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Evening Prayer

Image
Peace deep in the fibers of my soul. I come to prayer with my guitar in hand and sing songs expressing the calm in my heart. Give us peace when we tire from the struggle. Give us warm bodies to embrace, those You have brought into our lives with special purpose. Give us health when sickness weakens us. Give us a longing for Your touch, the promise of salvation, to shelter us in the night. Peace, I rest in a safe haven, where You protect my soul from all that hinders. copyright 2016 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

We Belong to You

Image
Often I pray for things I don't require, trinkets in life You know I don't really need. I am Your child, we are Your children, believing we need the glitter of this world. We belong to You Lord, nourish us as You would the sparrow, dress us like the lilies of the field. Walk among us, guide us down the road You desire most for our travel. We are Yours, we belong to You. I hope my prayer is not childish, that it is found important to You. I know You hear my every cadence and promise to give me only good things. Still, I know I am a child and my voice needs to be uttered with simplicity and humility. You know the deepest prayer in my heart today.  You know my unspoken sonnet for tomorrow. And You answer always, because we belong to You. I am Yours. My wife and family are Yours. Wrap us in Your embrace and secure us from all that binds our minds to worry. Often I pray for those closest to me, the gifts You have loaned to me. Caress their wounds when the world put...
