Song of the Vineyard (Isaiah 5:1-7)

Image
A lyric written nearly 15 years ago when I was paging through the book of Isaiah and touched by the imagery of a derelict vineyard. My friend had a vineyard It sat on a very fertile hill and he cleared away all the stones and he planted his finest vines. Now he built a wall to guard it and keep the wild ones out and he waited for his grapes to ripen and every grape in the vineyard made a sour wine. Is there anything I failed to do for my vineyard to bear good fruit? Jerusalem, judge between me and my vineyard. Here's what I will do, I'll tear down the walls and let the wild ones in. The weeds and the briars will grow over it and I will hoe the soil no more. Thorns they will cover it and I will forbid the clouds to bring rain. People of Judah I expected you to be everything good and everything right. Is there anything I failed to do for my vineyard to bear good fruit? Jerusalem, judge between me and my vineyard. copyright 2002 - Donald P Ja...

Mark 6:34

Image
Sheep without a shepherd, needing green pastures in which to graze, gather in the foothills wanting to eat and drink. Sheep without a shepherd, aimless in their journey. A gentle voice fills the silence, listen and you will hear. If you long to see, look. If you long to hear, listen. If you long to feel, touch. Sheep without a shepherd, needing the care of divine love, wandering through the throng that listens and hears His voice. copyright 2002 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

Last Supper

Image
Gather around my wooden table rest yourselves upon my floor those of you with initials carved who would enter through my door. All deniers and betrayers open your hearts share my bread it is offered from my flesh wheat of living and of dead. Gather around this wooden table Judas, Peter, James and John those of you who know my name hold tightly these unbroken bonds. On this vine I bleed for you again I will not taste its wine until I drink it next to you in a promised place a joyful time. Just sit with me at the end of this day before you deny before betray, my dying will save you though now you don't understand. copyright 1991 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazon.com/stores/Donald-P.-James-Jr./author

The Grain of Your Life

Image
A lyric written over twenty years ago,  in a moment when the peacefulness of complete surrender  caressed me. ~                        Purify the grain of your life Simplify the course of your waters. Be humble and stand without pride. Feel the grace that comes in surrender. Plant seeds nourished by our God. Harvest with joy the gift He offers. Make the rough -hewn barns of your soul a place of worship, not worldly stores. Sing your psalms to a small child's ear. Amplify the voice of holiness. Be gentle peace after the storm a bright light guiding through darkness. Be a prayer of life without end. A heart reflecting His sacred name. A straight path of hard clay and stone leading to an eternal embrace.  copyright 1996 - Donald P James Jr https://www.amazo...

Preacher on the Jordan

Image
The following is a lyric written in 1989.  The words were later put to music and used in a play based on the life of Christ.  For four years I played John the Baptist in this play and sang this song while enacting the baptism. On the banks of the Jordan, repentant children. So many coming toward me. Their shouts to save them, so uncontrolled, with such a desire to be cleansed by the sea. They gather in the sand. Thousands of questions about salvation and God's plan. Some with their piousness disguising them, but He who sends His son sees through you man. Your Messiah is coming. Repent for the day is near. He shall come to you with peace to dispel all your fear. Plague of threatened Pharisees, Abraham adopted sons, standing in your aura alone pompous and arrogant. My patience tried, God could make believers out of these very stones. Remember I am not he, I wear sandals soiled. His I am not worthy to tie. His face you shall know. My Isr...

This Promise

Image
Below is a lyric I wrote nearly twenty years ago . At the time I was singing and playing guitar with a Christian Folk Group known as Discip le. We offered our music at a handful of folk festivals and various churches in the late '80s and early '90s. I have always treasured the way God speaks through the music of His people.     From the time of Adam's sin, when the serpent first spoke to Eve and knowledge was given birth in the lies of the apple's taste. 'Til time of Abraham's fold when the Lord on high came down and Sara laughed for joy  at the promise of Isaac's birth. I will promise you descendants as numerous as the stars  that shine in the nighttime sky. Then Moses spoke to the people. He said, "the Lord leads you out ." Pharaoh let them free  so they may worship the Lord.    To the edge of the river Jordan where Joshua heard God's call       and the people followed t...
