The Race

In the novel 'Afternoons With Mister D', a story is told in the chapter titled 'Cross-Country'. The words below seek to illustrate the memory shared by Mister D, with his friend Charlee Parker. Enjoy! They were the two best.  As opposing coaches described, they could run like the breath of a cyclone.  Jimmy Klein was in his first year of high school.  His closest rival was in his second.  They were both lean and quick.  Speed and endurance were the only ways to compete in their chosen sport. The trail for today’s meet had a rugged feel from the start.   The bus ride had been long and rough to the northeast corner of the state.   Traffic on the highway had caused the visiting team to be tardy, adding to the freshman’s anxiety.   There’d been some rain the night before.   The wooded portion of the course might still be wet in spots. These things have a way of totaling up. “Be aware of roots,” Coach Preston had said, when they first arrive...

This story is a prequel to the novel 'Afternoons with Mister D'   An early October day.  The leaves were changing.  A maple, marking the location they arrived at, had turned golden a few weeks ago.  Already it had dumped nearly all of its ornamentation.  Two young men, friends since the days of grammar school, stood beside a rectangular boundary of light green grass, planted at the end of summer. "I'm joining the seminary," One of them said.  His name was Jimmy Klein.  He'd graduated high school a little less than a year and a half ago.  He delayed going to college.  His friend, the one beside him, Nicolas, was beginning his second year at a state college. "You talked about taking that road when we were Freshmen in high school," Nicolas said. "Yeah... then second year came... Cross Country..." "I remember." Nicolas scuffed the grass with the soul of his shoe.  To everyone around him, he was known as Nick, or Nicolas D.  No one eve...

This story includes a couple characters from 'Afternoons With Mister D'. Monica, a nurse from the convalescent home, and Lloyd, her pianist fiancé. Afternoons With Mister D He looked around the wallpapered room.  The pattern was dated, like something his own grandmother would have had on her walls.   The whole idea of papering walls seemed ancient.   Still, he liked the room, as it was.   The oldness made him feel comfortable. He’d been here before, with Monica.  She was his girlfriend and fiancé then.  Now she was his wife, and this was the living room of her grandmother’s house. This was the first time Lloyd had ever come here alone.  On his first visit, with Monica holding his hand in hers, he felt scrutinized.  He knew he didn’t belong.  He and Monica, theirs were two worlds with conflicting histories. The coffee table in front of him, which might have pre-dated his parents, was decorated with matching tea cups, a bouquet of fresh c...

The Gift

In the novel 'Afternoons With Mister D', there is a story, or chapter if you will,  titled 'Youth'.   Mister D tells Charlee about his wife Tess,  and how they spent Christmas at a children's hospital  with a little girl named Ronnie. This, like other blog entries titled 'Purity' and 'Foolish' are extensions of the original stories making up 'Afternoons With Mister D'. I hope you enjoy this very special Christmas story, and maybe consider following the link at the bottom of the page  and picking up a copy of 'Afternoons With Mister D' Thank you for reading... God Bless and Merry Christmas. Ronnie was glad to see her friend show up bright and early on Christmas morning.  The young woman, who seemed old to the nine year old Ronnie, brought a young man who, as the recent girl-to-girl confession had revealed, was a boyfriend.  Maybe he was even more than that, her friend had said.  Ronnie's friend was in love.  That was obvious.  Ronn...

Readers of my novel 'Afternoons With Mister D' will find this story interesting. This is in response to a reader who said,  "I wondered if I was going to read more about Molly Boyd." Jimmy Klein and Molly Boyd are two characters who appear in the story 'X-Country' If you haven't read 'Afternoons With Mister D' and are looking for a really good Christian based novel, follow the link below and God Bless. "What are you thinking about?" Jimmy Klein stood at the window looking out over the snow covered fields.  They were standing in the dining hall of the seminary.  The holidays were all passed.  The snow piling up on the lawn was a product of January.  The best snow, as per Lucy in the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. "It's beautiful," Jimmy added "You think," the other said, sarcastically.  His name was Herbert Grainger.  His family had moved north from the deep south a couple years before he decided on answering God...

Miles Conrad coughed deeply as his son sat at the conference table and opened a file. "Maybe you should be home, like the doctor's said," Daryl said. Miles was proud of his eldest.  He had graduated near the top of his class at Harvard Law School.  Miles intended to make him a partner at Conrad, Jennings and Horwitz.  Daryl had expressed an interest in setting up a practice of his own, somewhere other than his hometown.  Still, he promised to hold down his father's end of the business until the elder man's health improved. "We could have done this at home," Daryl added once his father had stopped clearing his lungs. Miles Conrad had smoked in his youth.  He gave it up fifteen years ago.  Too late, the tar and nicotine had done their damage. "Not staying in bed like some invalid.  There are things worse than radiation and chemo." "Not many," Daryl said under his breath. "So, have the changes been made that Nicolas requested?"...
