So What Do You Say?

They said to him,
"Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.
Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women.
So what do you say?"

John 8:4-5
Jesus and the adulteress - Rembrandt

The accusers fall back into the shadows
when the light is shone upon them.
Their sins are no less
than the ones they chose to judge against.
The law of the Lord
seeks repentance and forgiveness.
The law of guilty men
seeks condemnation.

There are no stones to hurl into the air.
No blood is shed in payment.
Every accuser who drags the sinner
into the street
has cowered from the gaze of light.
What words are written in the sand,
hypocritical slander,
abuses of God's offered direction?

Do not claim righteousness
if you would consider casting a stone.
Do not claim the words of your maker
if you would judge her sin as greater than your own.
Do not listen to the words of salvation
if you have no inclination
to take them into your heart.
